What to Look for in an Offshore Staffing Partner for Your Firm

7 min read

Not all offshore staffing partners are the same. Here's what to evaluate before you sign — specialization, vetting, pricing, and support.

A visual summary of the core argument.

Specialization over breadth

A partner that staffs everything — customer service, sales, admin, bookkeeping — is a generalist. A partner that staffs only bookkeeping and accounting is a specialist. For accounting roles, a specialist vets, prices, and supports the work better because it's all they do. Ask what percentage of their placements are accounting roles.

How they vet

Ask specifically how candidates are tested. Interviews alone are not enough. A serious partner tests on real bookkeeping scenarios — reconciliations, close, software — and verifies certifications (QuickBooks ProAdvisor, Xero Advisor) rather than taking them at face value. Ask to see a sample test.

Pricing transparency

If a partner won't publish rates and requires a call for a quote, that's a signal. Transparent, published pricing lets you compare and budget. We publish ours. A partner that hides pricing until you're on a call is often pricing based on what they think you'll pay, not what the work costs.

Account management

You will need support after the placement — onboarding help, performance issues, scaling decisions. Ask whether you get a dedicated account manager or a generic queue, and whether that person has actually staffed bookkeepers. An account manager who understands accounting work is worth far more than a generic support rep.

Contract structure

Long-term lock-in is a risk. Month-to-month engagements keep the partner honest — if the bookkeeper isn't working out, you can adjust without penalty. Ask about the contract term, the notice period, and what happens if you need to scale down.

Security and compliance

Ask how access is provisioned, whether NDAs are standard, how data is handled at offboarding, and what background checks are run. A partner that answers specifically is one that has thought about it. Read more on outsourcing safety.

The decision

The right partner is one that specializes in accounting, vets seriously, prices transparently, supports you with real account management, and keeps the contract flexible. Compare partners on these dimensions, not on whoever called you first.
